I am an artist, photographer, filmmaker and anthropologist living and working in Andalucia. The majority of my creative work touches on magical realism, and it could be said that so too does my anthropology, which focusses on consciousness and performance. In my painting, the magic emerges from the connection between painter and medium, an intimate relationship where the medium is given the freedom to express itself. Some people describe this as a loose affinity, but actually it’s a rather close, tight, congenial bond in which a great deal of respect is given to the nature of the paint, the paper and the water, where closeness and freedom go hand-in-hand; a structure within relationships that I believe to be a crucial element in their success.
Similarly, the ‘hybridization’ process I developed as digital art from photographic sources, originally with flower images, combines the magic of the process with my creative choices to produce some quite spectacular and often unexpected results.
MUSHROOM WATERCOLOURS: embracing fantasy and reality in an exploration of the creative process that combines artist and materials. I have divided the watercolours into three categories but as you will see there are some images that span more than one category.
FANTASY: Here, fantastic combinations of texture, colour and iridescence, mostly played out using Daniel Smith watercolours, fill the containers of recognisable mushroom shapes.
REALISTIC: Here, a touch of realism enters the frame, but for the most part not as hard representation, more expressions through impressions of shapes, colour and form that emerge from within the mind.
MONOCHROMATIC: Here the focus is on texture, patterns and form; colour has been abandoned.
